What is it about:

This years biggest fashion trend-180 words

New designer-100 words

This years big fashion trend:

Metropolitan street scenes with clothing lines hanging from the reflective skyscrapers, skinny jeans, rustic coats, narrow sunglasses: these are few of the aesthetic references that relate to the newest upcoming 2020 fashion trend, 90's glasses.

From Billie Eilish to Bella Hadid, 2020 has set back the clock to a time of low socks, large trousers, monochromatic colours and a bit of gingham. If you've scrolled through any social media (Tiktok, Instagram, Twitter or even Facebook) you have come across this aforementioned style. This isn't just some relatively smaller glasses, or just some bigger jeans for "conscious" or "self-hating" people, this is a statement, a statement that presents a question: To be self-loving do you need to exposed yourself? No.

Miguel Pestana (young actor in multiple award winning movies) is a big supporter of this, stating in an interview "People see you for what you wear, or what you do and not for what you are." He continues, saying "I like being me however that doesn't mean I have to share my body".

New designer:

Coming from Instagram, the upcoming Canadian fashion artist/designer, Jasmine James, shows great potential in her new line of glasses, "Les lunes". Only 17, the young artist gets inspired by the difference in the world between 1970 and 2020, saying "Our planet changed in every single way, from technology to even the air you breathe and specially fashion." From this she gets inspired for a new and old type of fashion. Unisex sunglasses complimented by a simple white shirt, and then blowing on all social medias.

After this she goes on to say "In this time where everything is collapsing among us, we need to persevere and remember what is good. These glasses are more than just that, they are a vision of what our world once was"

Statement of Intent

To produce a concise and clear statement.

The brief consists of creating a fashion magazine cover and a double-page spread, this will be aimed at 14-18-year-olds, featuring the demographics and psychographics of urban middle-class teenagers (unisex) who are aspirers and quite extroverted; they would think of school as a needed part of their lives to reach their dreams, their favourite classes would consist of: Textiles, Drama, English, and Art; they would have multiple hobbies varying of the mentioned subjects; and finally, their income comes from their parents or guardians, meaning that the magazine would have appropriate media language.

From my research of existing fashion magazines, I have found that codes and conventions, for example, colour palettes are used to attract a stereotypical target audience. In my production, I intend to use particular media language elements such as a colour palette consisting of retro polychromatic pigments; for the masthead, I intend for it to be big, bold and white saying “KINDRED” meaning one’s relations or family; the image will be a close-up, eye level of a teenager’s face; the typography will be layered around the image not covering her face to show that she is the main focus of the magazine.

I intend to break the stereotype of males not being able to be in fashion with women, creating a safe space for people not only to distract themselves from the outside world but bringing people together and creating a place of gender equality, this appeals to my target audience because we are in a new era of acceptance and loving each other. I do intend to use the stereotypical codes and conventions of 14-18-year-olds to link with my target audience’s age. I plan to use intertextuality and reference the 90s as a different era, to show how far we’ve grown from what was acceptable 30 years ago but I also intend to remind what was good about it.
